ANNOUNCING

RAISING FUNDS &
RAISING THE ROOF

APRIL 18 & 19

A WEEKEND OF MUSIC, AUCTIONS, AND FUN UNDER THE STARS AT

Pappy & Harriet's
LOCATED IN PIONEERTOWN

In a nutshell, the proposed Eagle Mountain dump would accept 40,000,000 (that's 40 million!) pounds of garbage daily for 117 years, arriving by trucks and trains to be deposited on pristine lands surrounding the defunct Kaiser Steel iron ore mine at Eagle Mountain. These pristine lands, once protected, were given to the polluters by the Bureau of Land Management to build the world's largest garbage dump. Joshua Tree National Park wilderness will surround the dump on three sides like an amphitheater. The impacts from the dump to our Majestic Park and Desert Communities are enormous.

Successful lawsuits halting the dump filed by the Center for Community Action & Environmental Justice, Desert Protection Society, and Donna & Larry Charpied have been appealed by the government and polluters. The Law Offices of Stephan Volker have done a yeoman's job of keeping our Park and Desert Communities free from L.A.'s trash. Although the legal team is providing their services at a discounted rate due to the public interest nature of the case, the invoices add up.

Please join us and help us make this fundraiser a huge success.

The Performers

Acoustic Acts

We will be raffling off a stay at the Joshua Tree Rock House and the 29 Palms Inn along with beautiful artwork donated by the talented local artists of the Morongo Basin. RICK HIESTAND will set up his telescope for folks to look into the galaxy.

Tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets for the event (both days) are $35.00, and for either Friday or Saturday $25 a ticket. We are providing a discount for the under 21 concert goers on Friday for $10.00, with I.D.

The Eagle Mountain Dump threatens Joshua Tree National Park, the already threatened desert tortoise, among other native desert plants & animals. Designated wilderness areas will be littered with Southern California's garbage, scarce water resources of the Chuckwalla Valley & Joshua Tree National Park will be depleted, air quality will be degraded with 5,000 plus tons of air pollution annually, and the last remaining designated Class I airshed in the continental United States will be ruined. All for garbage.

BACKGROUND: The proposed dump at Eagle Mountain would parade trash trains and trash trucks carrying 40 million pounds of garbage daily, rumbling from Los Angeles through the Coachella Valley for the next 117 years, to be deposited at the doorstep of Joshua Tree National Park.

Riverside County first approved the dump in 1992. Environmentalists challenged the approvals successfully in California Superior Court, and in 1994 the project lost all approvals, and was back to step one. In 1997, Kaiser Ventures and Mine Reclamation Corporation (MRC) produced a new environmental report (EIR) and again was successfully challenged in Superior Court. This time, Riverside County Board of Supervisors and Kaiser/MRC appealed the decision, and on May 7, 1999, the Appeals Court overturned the Lower Court's ruling. Opponents filed a Petition For Review in the California Supreme Court. We were joined in that effort through "Friends of the Court" letters from then California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Joshua Tree National Park Former Park Superintendent Ernest Quintana, the Sierra Club, California Advocates for Wildlife (CLAW), Mountain Lion Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Planning and Conservation League, Southwest Center for Biodiversity, Earthlaw, and others. In July 1999, the California Supreme Court denied our request for a hearing. A Federal lawsuit was filed by the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice (CCAEJ) the Desert Protection Society and, Larry & Donna Charpied in 1999, challenging the land exchange granted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), among other issues of law. NPCA filed a companion suit in 2000. On September 21, 2005, Federal Court Judge Robert Timlin ruled in environmentalists’ favor and reversed the exchange of land between the BLM and the Polluters, and ruled on National Environmental Quality Act violations. The Government and the Polluters appealed Judge Timlin’s awesome decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The case was heard on December 6, 2006, and we await the Appeals Court decision.

This legal action became more critical with the efforts by the Los Angeles Sanitation District in negotiating with Kaiser/MRC to purchase the Eagle Mountain dump for its own use. Riverside County and Joshua Tree National Park will become the dumping ground for LA's waste, with Riverside County and National Park Service having little if any control over the dump once LA owns it. LA Sanitation Districts purchased the dump for $41 million dollars, being held in escrow pending the resolution of the lawsuits. If you like good ole rock n' roll or are concerned about our desert environment, join us for a fun weekend and support a good cause in Rockin' For Joshua Tree. The Dark Bottle Rooms

The Dark and Bottle Rooms are a recent acquisition and are part of the original structure of Irene's Historic Adobe. At one time The Bottle Room was Irene's Studio and is decorated in a bottle motif with bottles built into the walls. They have been beautifully restored with art from many local artists giving them loads of hand crafted charm. The spacious bathrooms have huge claw foot tubs to soak in after a day of touring the murals of Twentynine Palms. They both have deliciously comfy queen beds for relaxing after your hot bath. Pets are allowed in these rooms.

Apache Plume

Apache Plume is one of the original Adobe Bungalows. Built in 1934 by the Stubbs brothers, the thick adobe walls provide insulation during the warm desert days and cold nights to keep it comfy at all times. There is also a fireplace for those cold winter nights when you want a romantic evening by a blazing fire. The room has a queen-sized bed, a private sun patio, a bathroom with a shower, and a marvelous view of the desert to the north and the mountains of the Joshua Tree National Park to the west. Decorated with creations by local artists, Apache Plume is one of our most popular rooms. Pets are allowed in this room.

People traveled far and wide to Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown on Earth Day weekend April 18 & 19th to support Rockin' For Joshua Tree, a campaign to protect Joshua Tree National Park and Desert Communities from a century of Los Angeles’ trash. The legendary rock star, Eric Burdon kicked off the campaign in 2000 to raise money and expand support for the battle against the dump and raise awareness to that fact that the dump, if built, would bring 40 million pounds of garbage daily for the next 100 years and deposit it on the doorstep of Joshua Tree National Park.

The entertainment was non-stop, professionally emceed by desert radio's Gary Daignault along with Julia Boyd. The music was everything from folk to rock & roll to zydego music starring THE SIN CITY ALL STARS, TIM EASTON, BOBBY GARCIA, CHRIS LATERZO & BUFFALO ROBE, THE HICKMEN, RABBITS WITH BAD HABITS, REALLYSHOOO ZYDECO, SHAWN MAFIA, THE SIBLEYS, UNHERD, and A great line up of acoustic acts included TED QUINN, CHRIS LATERZO, BARBARA BUCKLAND, VICKIE HILL, AND PAT GORMAN.

Rick Heistand and friends set up 6 telescopes with virtual reality technology and people “viewed the moon like I never have before”a thrilled high school student exclaimed. Saturday night, emcee Gary Daignault drew the winning raffle tickets for a stay at the Joshua Tree Rock House and the 29 Palms Inn. The winners are local activist Chase Morning and San Bernardino activist Susanna Negrete.

What makes this benefit concert even more special is that everybody, to borrow the line from a song, “played real good and for free”. The concert raised over $20,000.00 in ticket, Inn raffles, posters, tee shirts, art auction, donations from individuals, and in-kind donations. Our work has just begun, “we not only raised a tidy sum of money to go towards the successful Federal lawsuit that was appealed by the Government and the Polluters, we also made good contacts for the next ROCKIN' FOR JOSHUA TREE benefit event”, says Donna Charpied, one of the event's organizers.
